Severn Sound, the southeastern inlet of Georgian Bay, is one of the most beautiful parts of Ontario.
Its sheltered southern shore is lined with tiny ports and its deep-blue waters are studded by the outcrops of the Georgian Bay Islands National Park, whose glacier-smoothed rocks and wispy pines were celebrated by the Group of Severn painters. In Discovery Harbor, on the edge of Penetanguishene, and Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, outside Ontario. Alternatively, you can head southeast from Severn Sound to Orilla, home of the Stephen Leacock Museum – and just 120km from Toronto on highways 11 and 400.
There’s a reasonably good network of bus services running north from Toronto to – and along – the southern shore of Severn Sound. These services are operated by PMCL, who also link Toronto and Orilla. The Toronto to Port Severn, Parry Sound, and Sudbury bus route is operated by Ontario Northland.
